Over at the Faith & Practice blog Matt Waymeyer wrote a couple of articles about "What God is Looking for in a Pastor."
Andrew Franseen wrote this in the comment section:
"Youth Pastors" are just that: Pastors to youth. I'm not sure when the popular stereotype caught on, but don't most people think of youth pastors as something akin to social planners and activity facilitators? By extension shouldn't most of their time be planning nifty games, so our kids can waist their lives pulling on inner tubes or thinking of Christianity through the eyes of Fear Factor? So long as he can play the guitar, be up on the latest hits, and sing passionately--he can be a youth pastor. It seems fair that what God is looking for in a pastor, he is looking for in a youth pastor and a music pastor or however your church happens to assign the shepherd-duties. My question is, doesn't the bar need to be raised for youth pastors. That they can rightly handle God's Word: exegeting them, boldly declaring the greatness of God and the beauty of Christ and applying them relevantly to students. Is that what most Christians want in a youth pastor? Or someone to play with the kids, you know baby-sitting, only for teens.
This is the mindset that youth ministry material and youth ministers need to have. Here is the two part series by Matt.
